Book Nerds Unite, Fun Stuff

Repeat after us: a booknerd ALWAYS carries a book. And if you’re super prepared, you may even have the extra fixings. We loved EXQUISITE CAPTIVE so much that we gathered what we think are the essentials for truly immersing yourself in the rich, sensuous world that Heather Demetrios created. Read on to find out exactly why we picked these particular items!

An Exquisite Captive Reading Kit

About the book:
For fans of Laini Taylor’s Daughter of Smoke and Bone series and Leigh Bardugo’s Grisha Trilogy comes the first book in the Dark Caravan Cycle, a modern fantasy-adventure trilogy about a gorgeous, fierce eighteen-year-old jinni who is pitted against two magnetic adversaries, both of whom want her—and need her—to make their wishes come true.

Item #1: Gold bracelets

Jewelry is a huge part of Nalia’s world: as a jinni, decorative adornments can be more than accessories – sometimes they have immense powers. Those gold cuffs on the cover? Nalia was once a free jinni in the realm of Arjinna, but she is now bound by the power of those shackles to her master, a wealthy bachelor living a lavish life in the hills of modern-day Los Angeles, forced to obey his commands.

However, we prefer our cuffs without the bonds of slavery. Check out some similar ones that we love ––>

Item #2: Custom bookmark

Although we believe that anything can be a bookmark, whenever possible, a custom bookmark shows your ultimate devotion to whatever you’re reading. It’s like matching accessories to your outfit. Not 100% necessary, but it just feels RIGHT.

Item #3: Genuine Jinni bottle

You’re familiar with the idea of genies living in their bottles until needed by their masters, or set free, right? In Exquisite Captive, you get vivid descriptions of what it’s ACTUALLY like for Nalia when her master punishes her with confinement in the bottle: the ultra-tight iron walls torment her physically, mentally, and emotionally as she has to endure months on end totally trapped.

Once again, we prefer our bottle without the threat of tortuous confinement. We’re lucky: Heather Demetrios actually acquired this stunning, intricate bottle from one of her trips abroad. Here are some others that we love ––>

Item #4: Sandalwood incense

One of the most incredible parts of Exquisite Captive is the way that you’re completely transported into the atmosphere, and that atmosphere is totally unique. Because Nalia essentially exists in two worlds: her memories of the magical, unbelievably stunning realm of Arjinna as well as her current home in the lush, lavish, and warm setting of Los Angeles, your senses go into overdrive when you’re reading the book. Burning incense will insert you right into Nalia’s world: the sensuous underground LA club where jinn from Arjinna meet, the fragrant gardens of her master’s mansion in the hills of Los Angeles, and her memories of her life in the royal courts in Arjinna.
