Kwame Alexander on SOLO
What’s up people! You are the first to know this news, so let’s get to it! I am beyond thrilled to announce my upcoming YA novel: Solo. This book has been such a crazy, cool story to write because I love music. I mean, who doesn’t love music, and the power and emotion that it plays into our lives? Music is the universal language that connects us all. And, it can change lives. It changed mine: Hip Hop, Jazz, and my fave during senior year in high school (when I was playing tennis and crushing on this girl named April), Rock & Roll, baby!
When Mary and I (yep, I wrote this with Mary Rand Hess, a good friend and HUGE Rock & Roll fan. If you mention Prince or Van Halen around her, she starts tripping out!) set out to write Solo, we wanted to tell the story of Blade Morrison, a young musician and the son of Rock & Roll legend parents, who is at a crossroads in his life. In this evolution of how Rock & Roll has both ruined and saved his life, Blade goes on a journey that takes him out of his comfort zone, to the very edge of the world, across boundaries, and into new territory—not only physically, but emotionally. In this epic journey from Hollywood to Africa, Blade decides the only way he’ll understand his past and begin his future is to find out the truth behind the music and himself.
But, this is also a love story, ’cause if there’s anything I love more than music and words, it’s L.O.V.E. In fact, at my wedding we played a song called L-O-V-E by Nat King Cole. So yeah, Blade falls in love in this novel. Twice. There is love, loss, and self-discovery, and a whole lot of Rock & Roll inside the pages of Solo. I told y’all it’s about to go down! We hope you’ll sing, dance, and rock out to the music with us.
“When the heart gets lost, let the music find you.”
Solo is available in hardcover and as an e-book, and both are now available for pre-order online. The book will be in stores nationwide and online July 25th, 2017. Learn more at BlinkYABooks.com
