Kimberly Derting’s Top 10 Crime Solving TV Shows and Movies
Most of the research I do for the BODY FINDER series, I’ve been doing since I was in my teens—reading psychological thrillers and true crime books, watching documentaries on serial killers, along with every kind of crime drama out there (movies and TV). These are some of my all-time faves!
THE FOLOWING. This is my latest television obsession, with a capital “O”. This show makes me squirm in the best possible way. Trust no one! (Image source)
THE SIXTH SENSE. Who could ever forget Hayley Joel Osment as Cole Sear, the tortured little boy who no one understood? “I see dead people” was possibly the most memorable line in cinematic history. And that ending…Oh, my god, that ending!
CRIMINAL MINDS. Possibly the best serialized serial killer crime drama on TV. Based on the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit, these guys solve crimes by getting inside the “unsub’s” head. Uber creepy, and uber awesome!
What do undercoating, a wood chipper, and the Coen brother have in common? The absolutely (un)true account of a kidnapping and murder in the darkly humorous FARGO. And, yes, I will take the undercoating.
MEDIUM. I was crushed when Allison DuBois and her ghost-whispering abilities left the airwaves. I loved watching her solve crimes with her ghoulish companions, even when they got her into all kinds of trouble. (Image source)
THE DEPARTED. With an all-star ensemble that includes such heavy hitters as Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen, and Alec Baldwin, how can you go wrong? This movie was brutal and shocking in all the right places. And did I mention Leonardo DiCaprio???
BONES. In our household, the term “King of the Lab” has become a way of declaring victory in any situation, and our daughter went through a phase of ordering ribs just so she could “dissect” the bones. A family fave!
SILENCE OF THE LAMBS…both the movie AND the book. Two words: Skin suit.
CSI, all of them (Vegas, Miami, even New York), right down to the cheesy one-liners and Horatio Caine’s sunglasses. Yoooowwwwwww!!!
SE7EN. One of the scariest movies ever! When Brad Pitt got that package out in the middle of nowhere…Oh. Em. Gee! (Image source)
THE MENTALIST. He may be tricky, but I adore the whole “Red John” angle and all of Patrick Jane’s parlor tricks for solving television crimes. Also, you may or may not have noticed, but I’m a sucker for a cute guy with a big smile
What other TV shows or movies would you add to this list?
