A while back, I posted in the forums asking for people to help me find a YA book for every single state in the US. A lot of you helped me out, and so did this list when I needed to fill in the gaps. I didn’t tell you what I was using the info for, but now I’m finally able to reveal my true intentions. A MAP! Yes, that’s right. I created a map of the United States, picking one book for each state. Browse through, download, print, share the map and don’t forget to tell us how many states you’ve visited through books!
CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE MAP AT FULL SIZE.
NEW! CLICK HERE TO GET A PRINTABLE VERSION OF JUST THE MAP. (Right click to save the image on the next page!)
How many states have you read? Share with us in the comments or tell us in this poll! Now we’re ready to extend this to the WORLD! Help us with our “Planet YA” project!
PS – We made this map for YOU! All of our beautiful (yes, you are all beautiful) readers. So feel free to post on your blogs, Tumblrs, Twitter, libraries, wherever you want!
PPS – We do not currently have a print version for the entire image above, but we do have a printable version of just the map part. Click here to view it in full size then right click to save the image and print!
Sadly, out of all 50, I have only read 7! I need to get cracking on this list!
Better than my five.
Better than my 1….
We’re tied, 7/50! This post is amazing 😀 It makes me want to go on a long road trip and do some strange combination of audio books for the driving and hard copies for parks/beaches/hotel rooms. Will you do countries next?
2/50. I really need to start reading. I haven’t even read the SC book!
I’ve only read three! I better get going!
15 states down, 35 to go. I better gas up =)
Love the map!
You left Virginia off the list, but on the map it looks like it’s The Raven Boys.
Oh Debz, you are right! We added in DC instead. Will fix immediately!
Wow…only 5? Shame on me! I am about to read a 6th for school though!
I’ve only read 5 of them. Does it count that several on on my to-be-read list?
Man, I’ve only read 6 of these books so far. But at least I already had 17 of the others on my TBR list! 🙂
I’ve read 24 of these books!
wow…
I’ve read 16!!! Yay! Now just 34 to go. Challenge Accepted 😀
I read 16 of these
24, and have #25 sitting on my shelf unread. Almost half!
GFY
Shame on me, I only read three. But I am about to read my 4th one soon, although some of the books I won’t read because they are not the kind of books I enjoy reading. I’m either going to read Divergent or Unearthly soon, not sure which one exactly though.
This is the most amazing map!
I’ve read 14 🙂 MANY to go!
No, I’ve read 17! Missed one. *needs glasses*
Awesome! So much fun and I’ve read about a third of them.
Just finished reading Julie of The Wolves in class! I hope I can read the one from my home state! 😀
8! nice!
9 🙂
8 so far. There’s all on my TBR list. ^_^
Why is everything on the Internet geared towards the States? I’m stuck in Canada…
Anyway I’ve read 10. I would NOT recommend Shiver though!
I’ve read 10! Maybe we should do a State Reads Book Club?
10 so far, 40 to go…
WHAT?!?! I have only read FOUR out of this huge list! Must rectify asap!!! (Although I do own 12 of the books listed, lol!)
LOOOVE this map! Thanks so much for taking the time to putting it together and sharing it with us 🙂
only read 4 in a half of the books- not even the one from my state
You forgot to put Hawaii and Alaska on the map part.
I’ve read 8, but have 7 on my book selfs that I still need to read!
13! The Wisconsin’s book doesn’t have as interesting a cover as everyone else’s. 🙁
20 out of 50
I’ve read 19 of them!
And there’s a few others that are on my “Nerd list” (to-read list) XD
P.S. Why is Kansas always The Wizard of Oz?!!!
I’m sorry! But I find it annoying that Kansas is always associated with that book and no other book!!!
P.S.S. Yes, I live in Kansas…
What book would you suggest for Kansas?
I’ve only read 5 from all of these. SHAME!
Gah! I’m with you, Goldenfur productions! Haha! I’m from Kansas, too, and we always get The Wizard of Oz. -_- Great classic and all, but we Kansans get sick of hearing about it.
There’s: Moon Over Manifest by Clare Vanderpool, though technically Middle Grade, A Curse As Dark As Gold by Elizabeth C. Bunce, Crossing the Tracks by Barbara Stuber, and Carter Finally Gets It by Brent Crawford. That’s all I can think of right now. It’s awkward, just because I live in Kansas City, so there are a ton from the area, but the city borders Missouri as well, hence Blood Magic by Tessa Gratton.
Anyway, this is awesome! 🙂 I’ve read 17, but own almost all of them. I need to get to reading. 🙂
Also, The Center of Everything by Laura Moriarty, who hails from Lawrence.
I’ve only read 17 of them, but I own 32 of them! 😀
Of course MN is shiver… the whole book is set in winter. 😛
I’ve only read 4. 🙁
This is so fun that I blogged about it! I’ve traveled to 10 states and am so excited that Florida in Mara Dyer. Loved this idea!
i’ve only read 7…..shame on me! i’ve got a long way to go
these books look awesome, need to start reading though, only 3 out of them all, but i had several on my to read list already so…
I like some of these books but not all of them. I’m so ashamed of myself because I’ve only read 4 of these,
I’ve read 15 of these books 🙂
you should have done Twilight for Washington State. Would have probably added 1 more book to the people looking at this’s have read pile
I agree. Also, it would have been closer to the age ranges of the other books. The one listed is a children’s book not YA.
7 out of 50! lol. 43 to go 🙂
Curious to know why you picked Wizard of Oz rather than Far From Xanadu for Kansas?
“Rhose” Island? Seriously? Did no one proofread this map?
I tell ya, the smallest state gets less respect than Rodney Dangerfield. Lol.
I’ll have to check out Devilish though.
@Tara – It’s hard to spell check things in Photoshop, but thanks for pointing out the mistake! We fixed the error. 🙂
MARYLAND should’ve been SHADE by Jeri Smith-Ready. Most of the book takes place in Baltimore, Maryland and it’s current and awesome!
oh fun, fun, FUN! i was hoping to see TEXAS GOTHIC for TX, but i haven’t read the other. this gives me a lot of ideas for what to read next. what a great resource and idea! thanks.
@ Rachelandcomp – We thought about Texas Gothic for Texas, but then realized we already used a Rosemary Clement Moore book, and we didn’t want to double up!
This is fantastic! I’ve read 17…quite a few to go 🙂
Think it would have been more intersting and hard if we did this map with only paranormal and sci-fi book. There’s too many contemporary book on here that I would never read.
Assuming that the states mean the authors, I’ve read 19, but of the books pictured, I’ve only read 15.
Just to clarify, these are books that are set in the state they represent!
I haven’t read THE DIVINERS. Everyone should read the books representing the states they’re currently residing. Finally, some motivation to tackle on that mammoth.
Are the books on this list by authors from those states or do the stories take place in those states?
An Epic Map brought to you by Epic Reads. Totally sharing this! Is it weird through that my 11 year old has read more of these than I have? LOTS of books on this list though that are in my TBR pile.
7 rly i need to read some more
This is BRILLIANT. I’ve only “read” 7 states though. Must read more!!
@MelanieBrooks – These are books that take place in those states.
Read 31. Feeling a little nerdy.
Go you! I’m jealous.
This is fantastic! I’ve only read a handful of the states and the others I’m requesting that we purchase at the library I work at.
I’m doing something similar to this for my library and I was wondering if you used a specific program to be able to put each state with a picture?
@meganxelizabe – I just used Photoshop! I downloaded the map as an Illustrator file then moved it over to Photoshop.
Sadly 9 🙁
I am too behind. I have just read 7 of them. I need MORE.
Great idea, but I’ve got to start reading. Can you provide a list with just the biblio info?
This is so awesome! Is there a recommended way to print?
@bmiller – We suggest downloading the full size then printing onto multiple pieces of paper and taping together!
I’ve only read 15!! I better get moving!!
Luv it finally i c a rachell mead book or however u spell her name. btw its the book bloodlines the one for california if u havent read it but u read the vampire academy bookd i highly recommened it. If u havent read the vampire academey books.
Can I use these images to make a bookmark to distribute in my library?
@Ruhshellmc – Of course! Email us at epicreads@harpercollins.com with the bookmark dimensions and we can send you a smaller version if you want!
Sent you a file!
We’re starting a group in GoodReads called Around the USA in 52 Books for 2013, and I posted this wonderful list under our resources. Thanks for posting!
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/939139-general-places-to-look-for-books-by-setting
This is fantastic! I put up a display of 50 states books leading up to the election and I couldn’t find anything for the Dakotas, so thank you!
This is the most awesome thing I’ve seen for YA books! I love it!! I’m keeping this map until I’ve read them all! Thanks!
What a fun idea! I’ve only read one so far but I’ll try for more, definitely!
I’ve only read 7. I have a long way to go, but I just bought the eighth book I plan to read, The Diviners by Libba Bray. I love her other books so I am so excited to read this one.
I love this map idea! I’ve only read 7 though.
I’ve read 11!
Please put DC back on there. Use Rachel Cohn’s You Know Where to Find Me. NOT capital girls…
Thank you so much for putting this map together. I am a YA Librarian in Illinois and we are having a Travel the USA theme for our summer reading program. Is it ok if I use your map for displays and for book lists? I love it!
Awesome map! Thank you for sharing! Just curious what font you used?
We used a font called DK Pimpernel
I’ve read Divergent, Delirium, and White Cat. And I have a few of those books on my to read list.
I’ve only read 1 of these…man i feel bad now
I’ve read nine. But the other 41 are on my mental list! 🙂
I’ve read 14 of these…but many of the others are on my TBR list! 🙂
10/50….i need to do this. I love it!
I’ve read most of these books and hope to finish the list by the end of the year. Possibly.
I HATE “Pretty Little Liars”!
Missouri REALLY oughtta be Huck Finn, just sayin’
Only read 1 on the list. Kinda holding off on starting since majority of them are series books >.<. So I don't wanna get stuck not reading the whole series…
I am reading Divergent now, but I am definitely gonna try to read all of the them!!
Now, let’s add the US Territories!
Guam: Keeper of the Night by Kimberly Willis Holt
Puerto Rico: Emily Goldberg Learns to Salsa by Micol Ostow
US Virgin Islands: MY NAME IS NOT ANGELICA by Scott O’Dell (though technically during the novel the island is British controlled)
Can’t find one for American Samoa. 🙁
Why does Kansas have to be the Wizard of Oz? How about the Mark by Jen Nadol; it’s set in Wichita, or The Blood Keeper by Tessa Gratton, which is in Lawrence, KS (or thereabouts).
Look beyond the cliche, people!
With these books, you get a more modern taste of Kansas that shucks (no corn pun intended) the stigma of being set in the Wiz state. Please, please consider reading those instead unless you’re truly set on reading WoO.
i have only read one but i have beautiful creatures is the next one i am reading it is sitting on my desk
Only 5!!!
It would have been a much better graphic if you could click on the book and it would link to the book review or place to purchase. Just a suggestion!!
I’ve only read 4, but I own another 13! Oh 13 is unlucky – will have to buy more books 🙂
I have read only 13 of the ones on display but I intend to read all 50!
Don’t forget! You can view all of our world reading maps here! (Still a few more to come!)

I have read 17 of the books. Not even half way there.
I have read only like 1 or 2 of them but I have visited many other states from different stories.
GO CHICAGO!!!!!
What state it stands on USA?
http://camcashmodels.com/
I’ve read quite a few of these but I think it’s funny that the first one I read, was my state’s.
Sorry, but the only one (be ashamed of me!). It’s Kansas, The Wizard of Oz, the first book in the Oz series, written by L Frank Baum, one of the greatest authors EVER, at least in my opinion. Sadly, out of everyone I know, I’m the only person who knows about and reads the Oz series. Still, I’m going to make my states go up!
Wow. This is horrible but I’ve only read one of these! Divergent of course(: I loved it! Many of these books are already in my To-Read list on goodreads. I should go through all of these, but I just already feel so overwhelmed by all of the books I already want to read!
OMG such a cool idea luv it 15 states down a bunch more to go totally printing this map and putting it on my bookshelf
Change me to two! The Wizard of Oz and Under the Blood Red Sun. We read that book in 5th grade; I can’t believe I missed that book when I still talk about it (Hey, I’m entering High right now).
Wow I have only read 1 of these, well I guess I have many great books ahead of me on my tbr.
I’ve read four…freaking four. 46 left to go.
I have only read 7 of them:(
I’ve read 15 out of the 50 states! 35 to go!
I like how John Green sets his book in his home town. I’ve read 7, and The Fault in Our Stars is probably sitting somewhere in an infinite stack..
I\’ve only read 8 of these so far, but definitely will be working my way across the USA! 🙂
This is amazing. Do you have something for third-fifth grade students? I would LOVE to do this in my classroom.
No offense to the late and esteemed Jean Craighead George, but a more authentic representation of Alaska for teens would be Debbie Dahl Edwardson’s MY NAME IS NOT EASY or BLESSING’S BEAD. If you want more details, see Barrow resident Martha Stackhouse’s review of Julie of the Wolves at:
http://www.ankn.uaf.edu/iks/hail/JulieWolves.html
I’ve only read 10 of them! Im set on reading the rest of them.
Illinois, Kansas, Ohio, South Carolinia, and Washington down… everything else to go.
I’m printing a copy to post in my library. I love this and what a fun project. I’ve read about ten of books at least, now I want to read more.
PRIEST ODUMA thank you for casting my love spell and thank you for always being so kind and understanding. I love receiving your emails. I’d better get crackin’, I’ve only read 10! And not even the one in my home state of NH. Though surely it should be a Jodi Picoult novel. 😉 Most of these are already on my TBR but I did had a few!
I’ve read 12 on this list and own a few other ones. I do wish there was something else for Alaska. I wouldn’t really consider Julie of the Wolves a YA book and most of the other states had books that were more recently released. It would also have been nice if Alaska was actually on the map (Hawaii too). Can you tell I live in Alaska?
Soooo, I need to get my read on cause I’ve only read 8 and they were forever ago……..
I’ve read 9 and that’s been over the course of at least one year… definitely need to pick some of these up.
I’m also on goodreads if anyone wants to add me. Maybe you’ll find something that’s been missing from your life.
goodreads.com/asher_imru
So far I’ve read eleven of these!! But sadly, not the one for my the state I actually live in (Michigan), nor the one I lived in before (Utah)
But have faith!! I will!!
