Holiday Author Takeover - Ellen Oh, author of Prophecy, shares her story on Epic Reads!

Did you take some risks in 2012? Or will 2013 be your year to take some crazy chances? Today, we have Kat Zhang, author of What’s Left of Me, discussing this very topic as part of our holiday author takeover.

The Year of Taking Crazy Chances by Kat Zhang

I can’t believe that in a few days, 2012 will be over. It’s crazy, and it’s definitely a year that will be seared in my mind forever. It’s the year I went to BookExpo America (the mecca of all things bookish, I swear), the year I got to meet my agent and editor for the first time (plus the awesome-tastic EpicReads girls! Sadly, Snarkles hadn’t yet joined the team), the year I started my senior year of college, and, of course, the year What’s Left of Me hit shelves.

The thing is, many of the most awesome things that happened to me in 2012 happened because in early 2009, I took a crazy chance (crazy because I really should have been, you know, studying for IB and AP tests) and started writing a story. Then in 2011, I took another crazy chance and started querying it.

In general, I’m not really a “crazy chances” kind of person. I color in the lines. I like to know where I’m going to land before I leap. But you know what? It’s almost New Years, and as my resolution, I’m declaring 2013 The Year of Taking Crazy Chances. Yes, for you, too.

(yes, there are limits. no, don’t break any laws. no, “Kat said I should” will NOT fly with the police.)

I have a board on Pinterest where I collect interesting quotes. A recent favorite is:

Now, all of you probably aren’t like me. For some people, taking chances and being a little crazy comes easily. If you are like me, though, sometimes you need a little push. You need a reminder that crazy can be good ;) This is your push. Your reminder.

So go out there. Do something you’ve never done before, something you’ve never even thought about doing—or something you’ve always wanted to do but never dared to. Take a leap without looking for the ground. Maybe you’ll discover yourself somewhere more awesome than you ever dreamed.

Crazy things I’ve already got lined up for 2013? Well, for starters, I just applied for grad school, so that’s going to be new ;) I’m also taking an acting class and a film production class next semester, two things I’ve never really done before (acting, a little—film production, not at all!).

What’s the craziest chance you took this past year? Anything big planned for 2013?

P.S. Leaping off high surfaces not actually recommended. Unless you’re going skydiving. Have heard that’s quite the thrill!

No crazy things this year, but I want to change that next year

Nothing really crazy this year, as far as I can remember. Hopefully I’ll do something next year!

The biggest chance I took this year? Well there is two. The first would have been dating my ex…we took a big chance in dating because we were best friends and we didn’t want to mess up our friendship, however even though we didn’t work out as a dating couple, he is still my best friend. The second big chance I took was enrolling back in school. I haven’t been in school for three years, so I thought I would take a chance and enroll again and see how it went. I found out that I still like school and hope to continue my education as funds allow me too. As far as plans for 2013, I don’t have any yet but anything can happen.

Awesome discussion (such a cute idea with the author!)!!!!! I definitely need to take Kat Zhang’s advice and take some more crazy chances this year ;)

Craziest thing I did this year was consistently blogging and post reviews on my blog because I am surprised I didn’t give up.Next year I hope to start my epic book that I have been thinking about for awhile.

So proud of you, Kat! Taking chances is great when you are ready for them–and that’s the thing. Through hard work and talent you were ready. What’s Left of Me is wonderful and I can’t wait for the sequel!

I found a job this year, and been working on myself while the kids are all in school.

Eek. I definitely need a push in order to do something crazy. I’m not a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants kind of gal, though sometimes I’d like to be.

I’m afraid I’ve been taking it wayyy too safe this past year. >___<
Time to schedule a skydiving appointment. Or maybe ziplining…

Congratulations on applying to grad school! That’s fantastic. I plan to finish my manuscript and send out queries in 2013. The craziest chance I took in 2012 was applying to grad school and attending even when I didn’t know whether it was right for me. I’m glad I did it.

The biggest thing I did this year was start my blog. It all happened because I needed to get away from my now ex, but I kept with it after all was said and done. It is my biggest accomplishment that I took and chance on and continued doing this year. As for next year, I will be applying to Officer Training School.

Hey Kat :) The new courses you’ll be taking sounds amaaaazing. Good for you!

I’m taking a big chance, well chance, more like adventure ;) I’m heading off to England for the Spring semester! I leave at the end of January! Am so so so excited.

And hopefully completing a second draft of my NaNo project novel.

    Cheers,
    Happy New Year

My crazy chance in 2013 will be travelling to a foreign country ~ I have no idea if I’ll be able to afford it, or where I’ll go, or when; I just know that I need to travel!
My crazy chance in 2012 was landing my dream job as a Teen Librarian! What a crazy amazing surprise!

I’m applying to Grad school as well. Undergrad didnt go all to well for me due to family problems, life problems and relationships and I felt like my whole world was a mess. I never thought I could do something, be someone. I never thought I was gonna make it. Then I started baking and I absolutely loved it. SO MUCH. I took a chance and started going out there and baking for other people, they loved it, and it built my confidence. If I could start baking from scratch I could do anything, I took a cake decorating class followed by applying to grad school. I also went ice skating for the first time (it was a blast I loved it so much). I began to clean up my life, and its still hard sometimes, but I’m trying, I’m not giving up.

I would never ever skydive or anything that has to do with heights :D Thanks for the great post and giveaway!

I actually stood up to people and told them, ‘no.” I rarely do that. I even told some that I couldn’t have them in my life anymore because of their behavior.

Not much stands out for me in 2012. There’s a slight chance that my husband and I might start trying to make our family a bit bigger in 2013, and that seems very crazy and exciting/terrifying.

My craziest chance was starting my book blog. And trying to keep it up while doing twenty other things. But man, has it been worth it.

    In 2013, I’m getting married, so I’m pretty freaked/excited about that! =)

For 2012, I got to do a lot of awesome things. I think the craziest and most unexpected one was getting the chance to visit the set of The Vampire Diaries in Atlanta – that was pretty rad.

For 2013, I have many adventures in store – my wedding being the major one!
