Do certain types of covers annoy you?
June 26, 2012 02:38PM
Does it ever annoy you when a cover's poorly done or it doesn't seem fit for the subject/genera. Generic covers, glossy covers...

Yes! I particularly wish the trend of girls in dresses on the cover would go away. Unless that specific dress makes an appearance in the book, I don't want to see it! I know it looks pretty, but unless it alludes to a key plot point or theme then I don't really get the point.

Oh man, the most annoying cover is the one with the girl crying. COME ON LADIES, BUCK UP. LIFE IS NOT THAT HARD ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU ARE ALL BEAUTIFUL & MODEST AND YOU END UP GETTING THE HOT GUY WHO IS CLEARLY WAY OUT OF YOUR LEAGUE.
Biggest examples of that are: Fallen by Lauren Kate
Juliet Immortal by Stacey Jay

There definately should be more book covers with tough, confident girls on them. Better poses, not these generic "elegent" poses. Something more defiant...

I totally agree with the girl crying thing. It's sooooo overused. I don't really have a preference. I read the synopsis befor I read the book. But the cover definatley catches my attention. Don't make it a plain cover. It's so boring and it doesn't catch your eye.

I don't like covers with shirtless dudes on it...
I know that sounds weird but it's true! And most books with shirtless dudes on them have a completely proportional shirtless dude (as in one with a ton of muscles)! And that's so irking! Since when I read the book it makes me imagine the dude on the cover as the dude in the book (but with a shirt on) and the dudes just walking so weird! He has so many frexing muscles that he ends up walking like an unintelligent zombie!! I also don't like seeing shirtless dudes... It was because of this face that it took me so long to finally read City of Bones. And when I did read it, it was online (so I never came into contact with the cover). Hopefully, I made sense... I apologize if I didn't. *rant over* |

What annoys me is some authors making the title and author name as huge as possible thinking, the bigger the better. One of the first rules of Graphic design is maintain your white space. Too little white space only makes the cover confusing and hard to decipher. Keep it Simple!

I like covers that are CGI-impaired. Like Sarah Dessen covers and the cover of 13 Little Blue Envelopes
