Anyone else as obsessed with book cover typography as I am? Here are some of my favorite examples:

So true! I am guilty of judging a book by its cover. Althought I have been finding lately that sometimes a bad cover = a great book. Like Sabriel. I've never been into that cover, but it's so amazing!

I know. I try to not look at a cover seriously until I know about the book. As for cool covers-I really like Hush, Hush. The cover has the perfect amount of creepy to it. Divergent's and Insurgent's are also cool. The gone series' covers are awesome, too.

I agree - I really like the text on Beastly and Slide! Some other great typography covers: Of Poseidon by Anna Banks, Masque of the Red Death by Bethany Griffin, Wrecked by Anna Davies!

I really love the typography work on these editions of Diana Wynne Jones's Howl's Moving Castle books.
They look really great in person, plus the font choice for the author name matches her other books (of this era), so even though the bulk of the covers look different, there's one consistant thing across all the different series, which is really nice.

I'm a Graphic Design major, and I took a class on typography this spring. Type on a book cover should be both readable and interesting. My title-type favorites are the Unearthly series and the Beautiful Creatures (Caster Chronicles) series.I love how the letters intertwine and connect.

I'm big into typography as well (I have a graphic design degree too, Haley!) and I am in love with the focus the type on book covers is getting. I particularly love the way they played with the text on Wither (Lauren DeStefano)!
One thing that I have found as being an extra perk for my ereader is that I don't judge by the cover on there since I'm mostly looking at titles. This helps a LOT for the books I might have purchased on a whim or in a bargain sale that might have a cover a really do not like - I'll often just forget about those bad covers once it's on my ereader! |

I would love to design my own typeface/title, and find myself trying to imitate some of the swirly designs like on the Unearthly and Beautiful Creatures books. But those use San-serif typfaces, and I like script and transitional serif type-faces the best. Or display faces with unique features. I really like the type face Angelic War. It's found on the cover of Anna Carey's Eve series.

I love covers. They almost always make or break if I read a book and if I buy one type of cover and it is a series they all have to match in my set...

Yikes! Looks like we got hit by spammers. I deleted all the messages and made the forum for members only, so hopefully that solves the problem!

YES!!! I LOVE the beautiful typography on book covers. Sometimes I get inspired just by looking at it. One of my ultimate favourites at the moment are:
KUDOS to these two designers or illustrators. I applaud their hard work! ![]() Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 08/18/2012 03:21PM by booknerdcanada. |
