What was your inspiration for coming up with characters like Wren and Danny?

1.How did you come up with the theme and plot of the story?
2.what made you decide to become an author? |

Hi Amy! I'm in the middle of reading Cold Kiss now and love it! You're writing is beautiful, and I find myself choking up a bit at certain scenes. I had no idea there was a sequel for this! Thought it was a standalone! Did you go into writing Cold Kiss knowing that there would be another book in the series or is Glass Heart an after thought?

Hi Amy, welcome to Epic Reads! Here's my question:
Do you think bringing someone back from the dead is selfish or unselfish? What are your arguments for both sides? |

I absolutely LOVE the cover art for both of your books! Did you have any other ideas for cover art?

I'm not sure! I wanted something different but not really out there, for one. And a long time ago I had read a book called The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane (which was later a really excellently creepy TV movie with Jodie Foster and Martin Sheen) and the little girl's name was Rynn, which I thought was really cool and exotic when I was twelve. So ... a combination of those things, I guess? When it comes to character names, I just let them come to me, and when they're right I can always tell.

I came up with the idea of bringing someone back from the dead first, and then I started to think about who would (and could) do that, and why. And that was Wren! Danny was inspired a little bit my first boyfriend, but he was also just supposed to be a little bit too good to be true -- since he was going to be dead anyway.

I had the idea of bringing someone back from the dead first, and then I had to figure out who would (and could) do that, and why. I knew I was writing YA, so first it was teenage girl and then ... it was Wren. It's hard to remember exactly how she came to life! Danny was partly inspired by my first boyfriend, who was an artist and incredibly sweet, but I also wanted to make him just a little bit too good to be true, since the reader wouldn't really know whether Wren was idealizing him in memory or not.

I think it has to be "Love doesn't break easily, I found. But people do." When I wrote that, really early on, I knew I kind of had the whole heart of the novel fixed in place.

I love love loved Cold Kiss and cannot wait for Glass Heart! I have kind of a random question. When you're writing, is there anything that you just HAVE to have or do? Do you have a scene that is your favorite or that was the most fun to write?

What helped you decide to become an author? If you could give one piece of advice to aspiring writers, what would you say?

Cold Kiss is on my "have to read" list and I'm very excited to try it. It sounds like a great story. Do you have any songs that you would say influenced your writing?

The theme was sort of a gift -- someone mentioned zombie books as the heir to the vampire and werewolf novels, and I started thinking about voodoo zombies, instead of the shuffling, brain-eating ones (much as I love them, they don't make great characters). Voodo zombies are raised from the dead purposely, and I wondered who would do that, which is how Wren was born. The plot followed pretty easily -- when you've got an undead boyfriend hanging around, you have to figure out where to go from there, and that's what Wren has to do. I've always wanted to be a writer, since I was a kid. I was writing short stories since I was ten or eleven, and my dream was always to write professionally. I'm so grateful I've had the chance. |

I did purposely leave a door open at the end of Cold Kiss, because I wanted to have things to address in a sequel, but I wasn't sure there would be one at the time. Writing Glass Heart was a challenge that way -- I had to really think about what Wren had been through in Cold Kiss and what she faced after that. |

Your grief can't be bigger or more important than whatever peace someone might have found in death. Also, the whole business of playing god is pretty tricky, and not usually a good idea. |

The original idea for Cold Kiss was two faces -- Wren's and Danny's -- with a cold breath sort of stretched between their mouths. I love the final art, though -- it's one of the prettiest covers I've ever seen. Authors are usually welcome to offer ideas, but cover design is best left to the art department. They're the people who know what will make the greatest impact, and HarperTeen does a fantastic job. |

I have a hard time explaining what I want to say, how do you explain things when writing?

Have you ever had to cut a character in the middle of your work in progress?
Which character is the most frustrating to write? Would you write from a male POV? |

I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I think one of the scenes that was my favorite to write is the one where Wren is dreaming about Danny and Gabriel -- the creep factor even made me shiver. When I'm writing, I usually have tea (either hot or iced), something to munch on, and the most comfortable clothes I own. Writing is a no-bra endeavor for me. ;-) |

Just the sequel! One day I'd love to maybe explore something from the family's history, like the first woman with power, but for now it's just Cold Kiss and Glass Heart. |

I guess I never felt that I had a choice, not in terms of writing anyway, whether I was ever published or not. I've always written, and I always will, even if I don't publish anymore -- it's just what I do. As for aspiring authors, if I had to pick only one piece of advice it would be, "Keep writing." (There are a lot more, like read everything you can, and question everything, but the most fundamental one is to keep at it. No one writes a great novel on the first try.) |

For Cold Kiss, my playlist was pretty varied, with "Honey" by The Hush Sound as the initial inspiration. The whole list is right here on the site, too: [www.epicreads.com] |

If there was a guarantee that it would work, and the person would really be alive again (not a zombie), I would bring back the husband of a good friend, who died much too young, when their son was still very small. |

Hi, Amy! Did you cry at all while you wrote this book? I can't imagine not crying--it's such a heartfelt and heartbreaking story!
