Our love for the Red Queen series is pretty well-documented. And honestly? We’re not too sure what we’re going to do after Broken Throne comes out. This will probably be us approximately five seconds after finishing this epic new collection:
How are we supposed to say goodbye to all of our favorite characters? What will we do without the political intrigue, the killer powers, the ROMANCE? Or without Evangeline, a category all her own, tbh? There’s so much to love about this series.
Basically, we’re pre-nursing a Red Queen hangover. Which got us thinking—what are some books we can read while we wait for Broken Throne? And potentially help us get over the utter heartbreak and profound feelings of loss as soon as we finish? For every element of Red Queen we love, we have a book rec! (Because of course we do.) World-building? Check. Action and adventure? Double check. A compelling villain? Triple check!

FOR EVERYTHING YOU LOVE ABOUT RED QUEEN
If you love: The Political Intrigue
The Cruel Prince by Holly Black
Uh, can we talk about Jude and the High Court of Faerie? Like Mare and the royal family, Jude doesn’t quite belong among the Fey—but that won’t stop her from trying to fight for her place, no matter the consequences. Defiance, deception, political bloodshed, and uhhh, all that betrayal and angst between Jude and Cardan make this a perfect read for any Red Queen fan.
Jude was seven years old when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King…
The Tiger at Midnight by Swati Teerdhala
An assassin legend and a soldier, part of two warring countries, cross paths and an unimaginable chain of events unfolds. These two think they’re calling the shots, but they’re not the only players moving the pieces. Sound familiar? (*cough cough* Mare). They must decide if their loyalty will take precedent over the promise of a new future, and the consequences of those decisions.
Esha lost everything in the royal coup—and as the legendary rebel known as the Viper, she’s made the guilty pay. Now she’s been tasked with her most important mission to date: taking down the ruthless General Hotha…
If you love: Evangeline
An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir
If Evangeline is your favorite part of Red Queen (and you can’t wait to see her again in Broken Throne!), have we got a character for you—Helene Aquilla of the An Ember in the Ashes series is a total badass in the tradition of our book bae, Evangeline. While she starts off as a foil for Laia and somewhat of an obstacle to Elias’s development, she becomes a complex protagonist in her own right as the books go on, and tbh we would die for her too.
Under the Martial Empire, defiance is met with death. Those who do not vow their blood and bodies to the Emperor risk the execution of their loved ones and the destruction of all they hold dear. It is in this brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, that Laia lives with her grandparents and older brother. But when Laia’s brother is arrested for treason, Laia is forced to make a decision…
If you love: Action and Adventure
Nocturna by Maya Motayne
Nocturna is fast-paced and hella exciting. Plus, a thief with a peculiar ability? A Prince who’s not like he seems? Like Mare’s thrilling, high stakes adventures, Finn and Alfie’s journey will keep you hooked from page one. (Psst: it’s also the start of a trilogy, so we have even more reasons to fall head over heels into this fantastical world).
To Finn Voy, magic is two things: a knife to hold under the chin of anyone who crosses her…and a disguise she shrugs on as easily as others pull on cloaks. As a talented faceshifter, it’s been years since Finn has seen her own face, and that’s exactly how she likes it. But when Finn gets caught by a powerful mobster, she’s forced into an impossible mission…

Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi
Danger lurks in Orïsha… and it’s up to Zélie to save the day and fight back against the monarchy. Now Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy…

Everless by Sara Holland
Everless is set in the land of Sempera, where time is literally money, bound to blood and extracted as coins. Over the course of this epic duology, we learn more about this terrifying, twisted world—and WE LOVE IT. This one is sure to cure your Red Queen woes.
In the kingdom of Sempera, time is currency—extracted from blood, bound to iron, and consumed to add time to one’s own lifespan. The rich aristocracy, like the Gerlings, tax the poor to the hilt, extending their own lives by centuries. No one resents the Gerlings more than Jules Ember. A decade ago, she and her father were servants at Everless, the Gerlings’ palatial estate…
If you love: Superpowers
The Belles by Dhonielle Clayton
In Orléans, the people are born gray, they are born damned, and only with the help of a Belle and her talents can they transform and be made beautiful. Uh, doesn’t that sound pretty dang epic? Different from the powers of Mare and our Red Queen clan, but still ridiculously cool, the Belles’ superpowers are a perfect fix for when you miss the Little Lightning Girl in your life.

She wants to be the favorite, the Belle chosen by the Queen of Orleans to live in the royal palace, to tend to the royal family and their court, to be recognized as the most talented Belle in the land. But once Camellia and her Belle sisters arrive at court, it becomes clear that being the favorite is not everything she always dreamed it would be…

The Hazel Wood and the Hinterland are many things: terrifying, fascinating, utterly compelling. We’re forced to fall down the rabbit hole of this world—just like in Norta. Despite how much we may hate them, we can’t deny that certain villains are compelling… (here’s looking at you, Maven). That’s exactly how we feel about Katharine! Calculating as she is, we can’t help but be drawn to this epic villain
In every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born: three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache.
