The Most Important Things You May Have Missed in 'Broken Throne'

The Red Queen series may have ended, but we can’t stop reliving every perfect, torturous moment of these books! And obviously the best way to do that is with Broken Throne, because this short story collection expands the world even further and gives us all the drama we crave from our fave characters. With like, slightly lower stakes.

In case you missed some of these moments (or haven’t read Broken Throne yet for some reason), here are our favorite details from the book! Warning: You may want to go and (re-)read it now, too.

‘Broken Throne’

1. “World Behind”

The story “World Behind” introduces a pair of characters that we must protect at all costs and would already probably, maybe give our lives for. It’s a story about a Red smuggler ferrying an escaped Silver princess down the river and we just really need them to sail away towards permanent happiness together. What are the odds we can get another collection after this collection to tell us the next part of their story?

2. Fourskulls

There’s an area called Fourskulls in the Prarie Lands that proves why we love the world of Red Queen so much! When we realized this fantasy world was actually North America in the far future, it took our obsession up to 11. Now, we find out that Fourskulls is actually the deteriorated remains of Mount Rushmore. We see what you did there, Victoria!! Ugh, her mind.

3. The comeback queen

Evangeline might have abandoned her responsibilities as a Silver princess, but you can still bet that she’s the comeback queen of our hearts. She could insult us within an inch of our lives and we would thank her.

Ptolemus: “I suppose insult thrower was already taken.”
Evangeline: “No, they’re holding the position until Barrow gets back from staring at the mountains.”

4. Maven’s final POV

His head is a twisted place, but we just can’t stay away…

5. “Officer” Calore

With the Calore court officially disbanded, War Storm left Cal questioning where he fit into the world. Well, we have to say, we kind of love where he ended up. Someone happens to call him “Officer Calore” and it just clicks.

Cal: “The title, new as it is, doesn’t bother me at all. I’ve been called far worse. Tiberias, for example.”

He may be able to control fire, but Cal still hasn’t recovered from that BURN.

6. All of the puns

Of course we couldn’t ignore that just a few pages later, Cal has this other thought.

Cal: “Even without her lightning, Mare Barrow still manages to strike me through.”

The boy loves his puns, and TBH, so do we.

7. The new Premier

We meet Dane Davidson in the Red Queen series, the Premier (AKA president) of the Free Republic of Montfort. He encourages Mare and her allies to think of a future that’s more fair to everyone in their society and helps provide a vision for their future. But our concern isn’t with him—it’s about who Broken Throne reveals eventually becomes Premier later.

We present Premier… Kilorn Warren?!

8. Mare and Cal

They end up, well…

Sorry! We know we’ve been through a lot of ups and downs together, but if you don’t know yet, you really have to read Broken Throne to find out how their story ends. 😉
