Okay, high school is tough enough, but imagine going to one where every graduating class, three queen bees are forced to fight to the death, using magic and cunning to do what they can to win the prom night crown. And then having to deal with senior superlatives on top of that?! Yeah, we know. INSANE.
That’s what high school would be like on Fennbirn Island, anyway. Probably.
If you haven’t read it yet, THREE DARK CROWNS is the dark and twisting fantasy that’s not-so-lowkey become our newest obsession. Every generation, three triplets are born—each possessing their own gifts—who must compete to become the queen crowned. This witchy competition has everything: family, betrayal, mainland suitors, and characters that you’ll find yourself rooting for even though you also love their biggest rival. And so, because we love this series and think the only place worse than Fennbirn Island is a high school hallway, we decided to give these characters some awards. Some… particularly yearbook-ish awards.

Three Dark Crowns Superlatives
If there are two things that come to mind when we think about Arsinoe, it’s how much she loves food and how short her temper can be—for good reason, we might add. So she obviously is winning the award for being the Hangriest Girl in the Room. You go Glen Coco, go get a much deserved reward snack down on the docks.
Katharine at the beginning of THREE DARK CROWNS would definitely be getting a different award than Katharine at the end of book… yet here we are. We do not want to be on her vengeance list.
What can we say about Mirabella? She is the kindest of her sisters, and never really wants to hurt them. Violence just isn’t her thing. But what do the people of Fennbirn Island know? She’s super strong and, hey, she’s got great hair! Sorry, M.
Oh Pietyr… what are we going to do with you? What is Katharine going to do with you?
Sure, Madrigal has her heart in the right place (sometimes), but her methods are less than ideal. They’re also less than effective. And do we really need to bring up that whole mess with Caragh? Come on Madrigal, do better.
Jules… we love you. That is all.
For someone who doesn’t actually have anything to do with the queens’ fight, he sure managed to get himself tangled up inside it. A boat wreck, a tryst on the beach, and a love triangle between two of our favs?! Joseph, you messy, messy boy.
WILLIAM CHATWORTH JR.
Is it too much to ask for to let Billy and Arsinoe have their happy ending? Please?!
Camden is somehow the toughest familiar on Fennbirn Island, and yet also we really want to cuddle up with her. Alternatively called The Best of Both Worlds award.
At least Katharine has… something like a mother figure…
But for this witch, need we say more? Please leave our poor avenging girl alone! What are the odds that Kat will turn on her Arron roots and make us all a little happier?!
We really did not know where to begin for the woman who suggested murdering and butchering Mirabella’s sisters. But as far as the rest of the Island knows, Rho is just an intense priestess, a tutor for a queen with a particularly mean streak. We are steering clear.
About THREE DARK CROWNS
In every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born: three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions.
But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose…it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins.
The last queen standing gets the crown.
