Your fictional life is gonna rock. Have you ever wanted to know exactly how your life ended up? Who your best friend for life would be, what pet you’d have forever, where you’d live? There’s an old-school game for that! We can’t take the credit for creating, but we did put a fun YA twist on it.
M.A.S.H. literally stands for “Mansion Apartment Shack House”. Kind of a weird title now that we think about it. Point is, it’s a game where you create potential options for your future life and cross them out until there’s only one left in each category. Combined together, these make up your future life!
How to Play M.A.S.H
1. Choose your categories.
These can be anything from your future job to number of kids to mode of transportation—whatever’s most fun to you! We like to throw in a couple of ideal, best-case-scenario options and some nightmarish options, to mix it up and keep the suspense alive.
2. Find a number to count, and use this number to eliminate options.
After you’ve written all choices down, you and a partner(s) draw lines on the side of the game until the other person says STOP. Then count up how many lines you drew and cross out options until you have only one option in each category. So, if you put 5 options under every category, you cross out every 5th option until you’ve crossed them all out but one.
3. Brag/cry about your fictional life!
And please tell us about them, so we can celebrate/commiserate together.
We’ve made our game all about contemporary YA books, because hello, fictional lives are JUST BETTER than real life. Could we own a tuatara IRL? Probably not, but (spoiler!) Lisa from Team Epic Reads will be living with her tuatara the rest of her fictional life, and she couldn’t be happier.
But don’t just watch them play – get out your pencil and paper, or just use the chart we created, to plot out your own fictional life.
Tell us what your results are in the comments, and let’s compare!
